Speed isn't the only cause of accidents on 129. Crossing the double yellow is also a major cause on that road. Large oversize loads on that road need an escort. Something that many sport riders provide without asking.

With Knoxville canceling the Honda Hoot this year I would guess that traffic will be a lot lighter. Also the economy has to be taking a toll on folks vacationing here this year???

I am happy to report that April visits to the Smokies are up 22.6 percent over last year. Also, the park's year-to-date total is up by 5.7 percent!

Last year there was a 4 percent drop so things are looking up for our local tourist area. Thank goodness.

I don't want to get off topic but I am so glad that we can carry guns into the national parks! I know I am more apt to go there now.

That's great about park visits being up. I wish the state would publish Dragon volumes.

I'm from Miami and me and some friends are riding up in October, any suggestions if it would be best to stay on the Tennessee or North Carolina side? We'll be riding during the day and checking out some local bars afterwards any help there would also be appreciated.

The best places to stay are on the NC (south) end i.e. Robbinsville (IMO) but Graham county is a dry county so no bars and I can't remember any places right along 129 on the Tn end.

ToD website has all the info you'll need: Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC.

I always stay at the Phillips Motel in R'ville. It's a really funky, old place but clean and has the basic room amenities (fridge, m'wave, cable, AC). Not your cookie cutter style of chain motel. After a day of driving we always hang out in the courtyard with it's fire pits (with free wood), tables and chairs. And Miss Reba who owns/runs the place is a real treasure.

If it's your first trip take it conservatively until you get familiar with the road. Same goes for all the other roads in that area. There is virtually no cell coverage on the Dragon and emergency services are a minimum of 30-45 minutes away on 129 and even longer on other roads.

Thanks for the info. I've never ridden the dragon on my bike but i have in my car, i've been up that way with the family many times. I know it's a bit rural on the N.C. side thats why i thought about staying towards TN were you have more of a tourist area. We're just looking for something to do after a day of riding, and hanging out with locals is always a great way to get some tips on where to go and what to do.

Do you mean carry guns in state parks? I think there is a federal ban on any type of firearms in a national park.
