Can anyone tell me what the drive is like taking I-81 from Wytheville VA area to Pigeon Forge in respect to steep grades and windy curves? I am traveling from eastern NC and I hate I 40 between Asheville and the TN state line, all those curves. Thought about trying I 81. Alot of what I have found states there are many big trucks and alot of accidents on I-81. We are traveling Thanksgiving so I know traffic will be awful, just wondering how steep and curvy this road is.
Thanks

I 81 is actually a decent road and not a bad drive to where your going, the truck traffic gets pretty heavy at times, I actually did this drive last Thanksgiving from Bristol to Crossville and traffic was light. No steep grades no bad turns.

Default Good Road

I agree with the above, good hwy. I used to have to drive that I-40 from TN to NC a lot and I did not like the switch backs either. Now that they have opened up I-26 I can get from Johnson City to Asheville in an hour and a beautiful easy drive.
But seeing as you are looking to drive to Pigeon Forge on 81, I have some pictures between JC and Sevierville, this will give you a good idea.

I drove 81 Tri-Cities to the 40/81 (and on to Knox) merge twice a week for a year. Not sure about the upper part you'd be driving, but the part I'm familiar with is very nice, straight, flat, etc.

I wouldn't say it's steep or curvy at all. I drove I-80 from Kingsport to I-77 just last weekend and the traffic was very light - although it was not a holiday. I was annoyed at the lower speed limit, but I think that's a personal problem.

I agree with the lower speed limit thing! hahahahha
It is frustrating being able to go 70 for so many miles on 81 then to be slowed down to 60 or 55 and there is not much traffic difference in those zones.

Yes!! I drove from Kpt to Fayetteville and then to OBX and the speed limit drove me insane. Well, more insane after I was pulled over in NC for driving 80 in a 55 and decided I should obey.

Jeff County in TN drives me insane, too... I hate randomly low speed limits. Hell, you know something's wrong when the Interstate speed limit matches, or in some cases is lower than, state routes (like 107)!!!

Ouch. I got pulled in Sevier County, 92 in a 65. I had just left Knox and forgot that other counties' cops actually will pull you over on the interstates...

Or the State Troopers! Although, I can't really complain since I generally drive too fast and the police officer in NC didn't give me a ticket.
