Not curvy at all and nothing like I-40 near the TN-NC lines. That goes over the spine of the mountains... I-81 runs down a valley. There are some hills, but its straight. There may be some hills / slight curves if I recall around Wytheville/Marion, but nothing bad. The photos that MBMOUSE presented are superb examples of how I-81 is. I had taken photos about like that last summer.

Thanks ya'll for all the info about the road. I am definitely taking that route and according to mapquest its only about 15 miles longer than I 40. Don't mind that at all. Take care and have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving as we plan to do in the hills of east Tennessee!!!
