I grew up in Greeneville and it is a very safe town. Drugs were never really an issue. Occasionally you would get a few kids that smoked pot, but that is pretty commonplace in every HS these days.

City schools are good; county schools are okay, but definitely choose city if possible. Not sure what the "crime rate" is in the schools there, but I'm sure it is fine. Again, there were never was really any problems there...the occasional fight once a year or so, and that was about.

The only "area" that I'd avoid is Davis Street and the surrounding ones right by it. It is just past the post office and is honestly not that bad, but there is plenty of other places I'd rather live in Greeneville.

Not sure about employment, sorry! Good luck.

Maybe check out the TN state web site Tennessee.gov they have a link there to state employment. If you have passed your civil servant tests, they might have something there for you. There is a place called Greene Valley which is a home for the mentally retarded that seems to be always looking for good help, I have seen them advertising for office positions several times in the recent past.
I agree with Angler, stick to the Greeneville City schools, they are very good.
Crime is not a big issue in Greene County. Unfortunately, drugs are everywhere but you certainly will not see it blatantly in Greeneville like you would in any large city.

You might have to broaden your job search to Johnson City!

I went to school in the Greene County schools and they're okay - several of them (Baileyton, Doak, Chuckey, Mosheim) try really hard, but if you can get your kids into the City system they would benefit from a better education. Especially at the high school level; Greeneville High offers classes like sculpture, photography, and advanced languages (Spanish 3 & 4, Latin, French 3 & 4, others?) that the county schools don't.

I would hazard a guess that the drug problem in Greene County is worse in the countryside (due to meth labs) than the city. Still, if you can avoid any part of the western 'city' itself (Highland-area) I think you'd feel safer and the communities are cleaner.

If you're not big on being in the city itself, Tusculum is a good incorporated community within a couple minutes of east town. If you're looking to live just in the county boundaries, check out Afton, Chuckey.

Default greeneville question

My wife, 8 year old little girl, and I are thinking about a move. I am a general practioner lawyer; my wife is a special ed. teacher. I have practiced 16 years and my wife has taught for so long we think it may be time to slow down or retire maybe providing substituion duties or tutoring.

My daughter is our only child and we want her to be academically challenged but most of all to be safe. We live in a suburb of Memphis Tennessee and that probably says it all.

My question is, while we dont have many bills, can a lawyer start up in Greeneville and make a living ? Is it a closed community or is it one that might like to have some outside blood in the legal community?

I am certainly no authority on law in Greene County. I do however live in Telford about halfway between Greeneville and Johnson City. I would think that a new business of almost any kind would stand a much better chance in the Johnson City area. Johnson City is much larger giving you a much wider potential customer base. I love Greeneville, but it is small and when you are talking about a lawyer most people will search for a recommendation from a friend or family member. The best scenario, it would seem to me, is if you could find an established firm looking for another partner.

I agree with Willyboy. Greeneville gets very clicky. Only a few Judges and if you will be counting on court appointed clients and such, you might be on the bottom do to being the "new guy" and that status could last many years. I would also suggest you look to Johnson City or Kingsport as well.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Agreed with mouse or williboy. Also, you're going to find better schools in Johnson City than Greeneville. You can still live somewhere rural in JC or Washington County (out Cherokee Road, or up towards Grey, or out past Jonesborough where Williboy is) and be minutes from the city.
