To those who live in the Tri-Cities area, how many of you go over the state line:

To shop?

And where do you shop?

To work?

blessings, Shen

With gas the way it is its not really worth going over the line to shop unless its a very big ticket item, Its not quite $5 on a hundred cheaper on merchandise and grocery items and its cheaper on the TN side on resturant tax so I don't go much. Plus I'd rather pay the extra $5 than to have to deal with the walmart zoo on the VA side.

Hey when did I get to be a senior, I was just a member this morning, do we get a discount on coffee?

Once you hit 100 posts, you become a Senior. Then you get free coffee and a hotdog at Walmart, plus a 10% discount at the mall on Tuesdays.

blessings, Shen

I got to VA about 2 times a month to shop for meat. My office is only 6 miles away from the store so it is the same distance for me to grocery shop there than it is to go home then to JC for groceries.
I go to the Whites and Food City in Gate City VA.

I grew up in Bloomingdale & we used to go over the state line a lot to shop growing up. My parents still do for some things. I think to Whites or Food City for meat & some other stuff, but like someone else said with gas being so high it is not as attractive to cross over. When my dad smoked I know he got his cigarettes & beer over there, but he has not smoked/drank in years so no point in that. I used to go for lottery tickets, but now that TN has a lottery people probably don't fool with that either. Sometimes I think they gas up over there still if they are going over for another reason anyway.

Although I do not live in the region, I was recently in Abingdon, VA to attend a show at the Barter Theater. I saw quite a few "Sullivan" and "Washington" county tags in the Food City parking lot. Abingdon is about 15 or so miles from the TN border, so I'm sure people criss cross back and forth all of the time.

I noticed quite a few Virginia tags in Bristol, TN and Kingsport, but didn't see as many in the Johnson City area. Once you enter Greene County, the Virginia tags seem to disappear!

Shen, I live 5 miles from the VA border and often (at least once a week) go up to exit 7 to shop at the 'Wal-Mart zoo', Lowes, etc. It's a 13 mile trip for me, but worth it.

There is a new Sam's Club going up there, too - opening in about 2 months.

Exit 7 has just tons of restaurants and stores. Then if I want, I stop at the Bristol Mall at exit 1 on my way home. I like Belks and Penneys, at the edge of the mall - don't have to actually enter the mall - I like that.

(I work in Tennessee.)

I live in TN and never go to Viginia for anything.
However, if I needed quality furniture at a good price and had the time, I would definitely go to North Carolina!

Since this has been resurrected, I'll chime in. I work a few times a week in Bristol VA so I'll occasionally pick items up over there if I need them, at the lesser tax. Then a few times a year we go to Asheville, like williboy, mostly to take advantage of higher end retail. (Remember, I'm used to Knoxville shopping. )
