We're visiting Kauai next week starting on the 19th. So far, the long range forecast (10 days out) only shows showers with a good amount of wind. We've been to Kauai before in the Winter when it rained a lot and were at a bit of a loss in terms of what to do.

Virtually all of our family activities revolve around outdoor sports like snorkeling, hiking, boating around the Na Pali coast, etc... We have young kids. So, we cannot go in the ocean if the surf is rough with big waves, etc... Plus, I've heard snorkeling is much better with calmer seas.

Questions:
1. If the weather shows rain every day with wind like forecast below, does that really mean no sun? Have you guys been in the rain, clouds and wind without sun for many days like this with all the tropical storms? This just seems so foreign to us suffering from drought out here in CA. I can't remember the last time we had a good rain, seriously. Our forecast is the complete opposite with only sun, no rain.

2. If you had rain every day for your vacation/time off in Kauai, what would you do? Keep in mind you would have young children with you. So you can't just go hog wild and wind surf the storm the entire time.

Thanks,
Derek

When it says showers that doesn't necessarily mean it will be raining or even cloudy all day. There will be periods of time when it clouds over or is cloudy, and it might rain for a bit, but there should also be periods of sun or breaks in the rain. Plus, you don't have to stay up in Princeville if the weather isn't ideal there. Head down to the eastside beaches or to the south side and the weather can be totally different. I live on the eastside, and have a friend up in Princeville, and we trade weather stories every day because in just the short distance between us what's happening weather-wise is usually totally different (i.e. rain and wind here, sun up where she is or vice versa).

Oh, and by next week everything could be completely different anyway from what you're seeing now.

In all likelihood the weather will not be a wash out for all the different regions of the island for the entire day. Rain is usually quick and sporadic on the island. If it is raining in the north or east? check out the south or west side.

The weather is going to be very dependent on the hurricane north of Hawaii, more so for Kauai because it is more north than the other main islands - if it clears out quickly, you should be fine - if it lingers, it may - or may not - be a lot of rain.

Luckily you won't be there for the next 48 hours or so. Looks like a good night in Princeville if you prefer thunder and lightening over the usual 'idyllic' weather. What ever happened to that, anyway?

Thanks, all. I'm seriously feeling the Aloha spirit!

My wife and I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. Honestly, I was a bit down today thinking we'd be indoors the entire time playing board games with the kiddos. Not that we don't love spending time with the them. But hey, it's Hawaii and we want to enjoy the outdoors as well! Last time we were on Kauai was our honeymoon. So this trips holds special significance to us beyond just a family vacation.

BTW, I love the idea of mixed weather. With it come showers, rainbows, beautiful sunsets, sunrises, sunbeams breaking through the clouds, etc... I'd rather not have clear sunny days every day... too boring. Nature photography is one of my hobbies. So storms bring all kinds of interesting photographic opportunities. I just want the rest of the family to enjoy their time as well.

Thanks for the encouragement all. It is greatly appreciated!

Derek

This is wishful thinking at best. You aren't going to get mixed weather... You'll get solid rain. See if you can postpone your trip

Or go to Monterey California instead... According to the forecast you posted it's 69F there and sunny!

Kerfloofluffle! It will be fine. Intermittent showers with lots of sunshine in between. Pay no attention to that gloomy person behind the curtain.

MtnSurfer I have vacationed many many times in Hawaii in all different times of the year and one thing I have learned is that when it is raining, call up a restaurant or store on the other side of the island and ask them if it's raining, then book a meal. Rarely was I skunked with pure rain on all sides of the island. Course I love driving and going to the other side of the island is not a problem for me. Hope you find some sun!
