Hello,

I've been searching for protocol for the use of county jails.

First, what is the protocol for making arrests in a county other than your own? For example, as a sheriff/deputy you pursued a suspect over county lines.

Secondly, what is the procedure for taking a captive to a jail in another county other than one's own? So, for whatever reason, Deputy John Doe of Gray Co. arrests someone in Finney Co. and then he wants to hold the the prisoner in the Finney Co. jail.

Thirdly (and I know this is especially broad but all input is appreciated), how does federal law enforcement interact in the above scenario?

I'm not necessarily searching for information within a specific county, just various situations/examples. Expertise and experiences are greatly appreciated.

I'll answer #2 and #3: You can be held at whatever facility they want to hold you in. Prisoners are routinely held in another county when crowding conditions exist.

Individuals arrested on Federal charges are usually held at a local jail at the request of the U.S. Marshals, OR can be held on similiar state charges until Federal charges are filed, i.e., individual held on State narcotics violations and then subsequently charged federally and the state charges are dropped. Of course, once you are CONVICTED of a federal crime, then it's off to a U.S. Penitentary for you.
