If you can afford private school (and it is more affordable than most people think) than I would definitely choose Brookside. It is hands down my favorite residential hood in KC.

Agreed, but some people don't want to be a ten minute drive from an urban environment, they want to be IN an urban environment. I'm not too particular, myself, providing I like where I am, be it urban or not, and have lived happily in both large urban city centers, small communities, and very, very rurally, but there are those for whom it does make a big difference.

In terms of whether or not private schools are necessary, that's really a matter of opinion. I'm a public school advocate, myself, providing that there is access to safe, accredited public schools. I also work for a private school, however, that offers very specialized education to students with special needs who in many cases have not had their needs accommodated in public schools. There are definitely cases in which specialized private education may, in fact, be a necessity. And there are also cases where it may not be a necessity, but may simply be preferred, and if people want to spend on their kids' education, to be honest, I can think of far worse expenditures to make.

At any rate, there are, as has been mentioned, charter schools accessible to the Brookside community that offer an alternative education at no additional cost.

Thanks to everyone for their input. We will check out a variety of places but based on various opinions and research, we are inclined toward Brookside which we loved when we visited several years ago. It seems like an easier transition from Chicago for our lifestyle. Thanks again!
