I don't really get it either, but it seems like monkey-see, monkey-do. All the right-leaning folks in red states like MO see Trump flipping the bird at American values (by cutting taxes for the wealthy, dissing climate science, shredding international alliances, etc.) and they say "hey! why don't we do that for our narrowly held convictions? It worked for that idiot/clown, acts like a business manager on TV guy, why not us?" Pretty much all republicans are now using the same playbook. Progressives in this part of the country are mostly cowards - afraid of alienating the center, but the center is disappearing. Reactionaries do not have the same inhibitions; they are predominantly scorched earthers. The heartland is in trouble until young people and minorities start voting in proportions similar to old white men.
