I live in Mission. It's completely safe, is in the midst of a big civic push to return its downtown/main drag retail district to the "Main Street, USA" type atmosphere...very wholesome. They've done a lot of infrastructure work in the past several years and that's continuing. Downtown farmer's market is in its second year, a plethora of new downtown businesses, etc. It's also quite affordable.

The feel is very middle class/working class-ish small town/suburban. Whether or not that works for you is up to you. "Good" is subjective.

Westport has a high crime rating because it has the busiest nightlife scene in KC. A lot of people forget, or don't know that when just looking at crime maps because it appears to be the most dangerous area of the entire city (even places where there is real crime like regular shootings) when really it's just a place where a lot of people are drinking and it has a fairly high police presence so there's a lot of things getting reported. I'd say East of KU med like Volker or Genessee is a safe area.

Are people friendly to "exotic"/ different-looking folks? I get curious looks and draw the line at Q's like "what is your heritage?" Also, I grew up humble, but my clothes may hint at my current status. I want to be where neighbors are cordial and where I am not expected to explain myself.

Guess those places are ruled out due to quality-of-life crimes/issues.

This may be a little simplified, but if you are looking for urban, look at KC, Missouri - but I kind of think that wouldn't meet your definition of safe. If you are looking for middle class/working class suburbs, look at northeast Johnson County. If you are looking for upper middle class/white collar suburbs, look at Leawood/Overland Park south of 119th.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by exotic/different-looking folks, but I will say that there are lots of professionals in south Leawood/Overland Park that are Middle Eastern, Japanese, Chinese, etc. - i.e., not all white - so I don't think anyone would think twice, much less ask you what your heritage is.

Thank you. The apartment communities on Metcalf, etc. are not quite my preference, so I will look at Downtown Overland Park.
