Hello Currently I am living in Minneapolis, Mn now. My husband got offered a job in Overland Park, Ks.

Neither of us have ever been there, so I was wondering if you could please help answer some questions. Some of the things I would like to know is;

-Housing (renting vs. owning) (cost of living)
-Schools & Colleges (we are thinking of having children so schools for children is important)
-Crime (is there a lot of it or is it fairly safe?)
-Are people friendly and welcoming?
-Also how is the diversity over there. (I learn languages so its nice to have a little diversity)
-Is there a good variety or Restaurants?
-How is the shopping.
-Traffic
-Weather??
-We are in our late 20s so for the most part we stay at home, but we like to go out sometimes. Is there a lot to do over there?
-Is it a pet-friendly city?

I know these are a lot of questions so please pick and choose which you feel comfortable answering. Thank you in advance for any help I really appreciate it, it will be very helpful to be informed before making any move.

P.S. Feel free to provide any other information that you think might be useful.

This should probably be posted in the Kansas City forum under Missouri.

I have not lived there, but it is a a nice city and you will love it. I have cousins who grew up in Overland Park and I used to spend some time there. The schools are great and there is plenty to do. I would say you will want to buy a house. There are many, many options. Lots of restaurants and I am fairly certain the crime is low. Traffic will probably be close to what you experience in Minneapolis. It can be very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, with some mild days in between. We have lots of thunderstorms in Kansas with great light shows (lightning) in spring. Overland Park has plenty of shopping. There are some malls nearby and there are plenty of other options for shopping in the greater Kansas City area.

Housing - probably better off owning, but you'll be fine renting too. Low cost of living. check out www.reeceandnichols.com for homes to buy. Zillow Johnson County Real Estate & Johnson County KS Homes For Sale - Zillow for rentals.

Schools - wonderful. Blue Valley or Shawnee Mission School District. College - Johnson County Community College is in Overland Park. University of Kansas is 45 minutes away. And University of Kansas Edward Campus is in Overland Park

Crime - Johnson County is VERY safe.

People friendly and welcoming - yeah, for the most part. You might find snobs here and there, but for the most part no.

Diversity - not extremely diverse, but not all white either. Quite a few middle eastern, Asian, Hispanic, and black students in my kids' schools.

Very good variety of restaurants through Kansas City, both on Kansas and Missouri side

Shopping - lots of shopping. Oak Park Mall, Town Center Plaza, Country Club Plaza, among others.

Traffic - really not an issue.

Weather - Better than Minneapolis! It can get cold here. This morning it was 1 degree when I got up, with wind chill 15 below. But this weekend in the mid 40s to mid 50s. Last Sunday it was about 60 degrees. I'm sure we have a lot less snow than Minneapolis.

Going out - yeah, you will find places to go out. There are bars everywhere. Johnny's has several locations and there is Talk of the Town and Blue Moose in Johnson County. If you want more than just A bar, then you can go over to Missouri to Westport or Power & Light. Just call 10/10 Taxi to take you home. Do not drink and drive in Johnson County.

Yep, pet friendly. Stoll Park at 119th and Quivira-ish is an off-leash park. Always lots of dogs at Shawnee Mission Park.
