@aragx6 | I lived for the most part in the suburbs of midcounty StL around UMSL. But I also lived in the Central West End as well as a block or so from the Delmar Loop.

@xenokc |Thanks for the resources. I found an apartment that I really like in Hyde Park and so am trying to balance neighborhood with living space/cost. But I think there's always some marginal elements in truly urban areas.

I live in North Hyde Park and it is fairly walkable (though not as walkable as other areas like Westport). I've got a grocery store (although a pretty crappy one) a couple convenience stores and a drug store all within a couple blocks of me that I walk to fairly regularly. I can also walk to the Costco and Home Depot, Martini Corner, Union Hill/Longfellow (the Filling Station is a frequent walk destination). However, most often I just walk around the neighborhood for leisure. Unfortunately, I don't think South Hyde Park has quite as many walkable conveniences.

I think Hyde Park sometimes gets a bum rap when it comes to safety. I'm not gonna lie and say its a crime free utopia, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Some people may say it doesn't "feel" that safe, which can be code for "I see a black person walking down the street and that makes me uncomfortable." There are a few problem spots, mostly isolated to the Section 8 apartments. As long as you avoid those you should be fine.

With that said, you may want to also check out the West Midtown hoods that some have suggested: 39th St. West, Roanoke, Volker, etc - those are great neighborhoods.
