Ok, this is the last you'll see of my big mouth today but I recently had a discussion during my post-Winslow's visit about the river. I was hard-pressed to name a city that has ignored their riverfront as much as KC seems to do. Yeah there's a park, but where are the apartments, condos, hotels, conference facilities, shops, and restaurants? I think their missing a great opportunity here. It's like somebody mentioned in another post, everybody seems content with the status quo, the Texas, can-do, try to be better mindset appears to be missing here.

KCMO really can be an international city or at least a less provencial American city if they put their minds to it. I'm not complaining, I realize the Kauffman's et al. have done great things for the city and have left a fantastic legacy/gift to Missouri, but that's the status quo, why not do more? Do you know how many land-locked cities can only dream about having a river running through it? We have this great resource right on our doorstep, it's like a down payment provided by Mother Nature that is largely ignored. Sad.

The bolded is super obnoxious. Modesty certainly isn't something Texans lack is it?

Anyway, yes, the river is underutilized as a natural tourist attraction, but that's in large part due to its industrial past -- the river wasn't underused then but it was for commerce, not looks. Changing that is the sort of thing that takes time and money and other projects have taken precedence. I hope it's something the city will focus on soon, but I don't think just building a bunch of condos and hotels near it as you suggest there would be worthwhile.
