Hello,

I am a senior in college attending Park (only because I got a scholarship there; stay way from this school, but that is neither here nor there). I lived in the dorms my first two years, and the last year and a half I have just been commuting from parent's house in Kansas City, KS. I'm looking for an apartment to live in for a year after I graduate while I work/study for grad school. The apartment I'm looking at is on 36th St between Main and Broadway. Is this area relatively safe? I am a 6'2" male if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Realtively safe? Yes. We looked in this area and there are some real cruddy apartments with some riff raff hanging about. But assuming you feel comfortable with the caliber of your neighbors and given your size I think you'll be fine.

Can I ask what your budget is?

Right now I have a few thousand dollars in the bank from living at home last year and working a part-time job. I am not working this semester because I am taking 20 credit hours, but I will be working a part-time job next semester. I would say the highest I could rent would be ~500. I'm also going to a showing tomorrow at a place on 40th street between Walnut and Warwick (an area I am more familiar with).

^I'd say that's definitely an all-around nicer area. A couple other options from Craigslist you might check out:

Westport Studio Apartment (http://kansascity.craigslist.org/apa/2654792330.html - broken link)
newly remodeled one bed & one bath must see (http://kansascity.craigslist.org/apa/2650500793.html - broken link)
KU Med area 12 plex 3721 Wyoming St. (http://kansascity.craigslist.org/apa/2618253592.html - broken link)

Best of luck!

Some of the apartments on 36th have bedbugs according to the bed bug registry.
The Area from Armour to 39th between Main and Broadway is kind of sketchy. I mean the shell at 38th and Main sells Chore Boys behind the counter, which is a Brillo pad for cleaning out your crack pipe. But this area is seeing a huge influx of Hipsters and Young Church Types that go to Reedemer Church who are settling in the area, so its getting much better.
