I have been trying to determine the exact location of the old Plaza Theater. The Plaza went out just a few years after the Electric Theater on north Main closed in the late forties.

I knew the Plaza was on the south side of the square and thought it was at the vacant area just east of JC Penny’s (now Courthouse Exchange restaurant). That would have put the Plaza at about 111 west Lexington.

I have the Plaza pinpointed now as the third business building east from the present Bank of America Building. That makes it at 119 west Lexington. And, in fact, one of the sites listing closed movie theaters has it at that address. There was a drugstore next door west of the theater.

After the theater went out sometime in the early fifties, DuVall’s, an upscale clothing place, went in and was there for a number of years. The building appears vacant now.

If the link doesn't work it is photo 9 of 14 at the URL.

That does look like the courthouse and Bundschu's in the background.

But the street in the forefront, and most of those names, looks alien, chuckle.

I just noted your comment on William A Randall.

I recall that the Congressman from Independence was William J. Randall. Ike Skelton succeeded him.

This scene is the reverse from MRG's 1948 photo of west Lexington Street. This photo appears to be from around the same timeframe and looks west on Lexington, probably taken from the top of the First National Bank building at Liberty and Lexington.

The Memorial Building can be seen at the top. Below it is the marvelous old post office.

In the forefront is the Chrisman-Sawyer Bank before its exterior was modernized. Tucker Furniture is next to it.

Further down the street can be seen the rear of Bostian Cheverolet.
WCHS post and pic from #541

MAD's post and question from #543:

Can anyone make out what the first business at the lower right is?

That place is definitely 204 W. Lexington. The 48 Polk's lists it as Bain Jewelry. The 46 Polk's has it as (Roy) Keehnel's Jewelry Co. The sign looks "busier" and I suspect it's the longer name of the two, Keehnel's. The spot also look different from the pic I posted showing the block's view eastward towards the Courthouse (204 has a canopy). So a change of ownership with some cosmetic changes (along with the type of autos) leads me to believe it's Keehnel's, not Bain's.
