Suppose that way back in the 1930s you had parked your car under a street sign for the intersection of Carlton & Benton. Miraculously your car is still there today. What names are now on that street sign?

Nope, wrong side of town.

One of them has to be 34th street because it is a miracle my car has stayed there untouched all these years. Are there HiBoy coupons for sarcastic guesses?

KAW-LIGA - A, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer "YES" or "NO".
He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tomahawk
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk
KAW-LIGA - A, too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.
Poor ol' KAW-LIGA, he never got a kiss
Poor ol' KAW-LIGA, he don't know what he missed
Is it any wonder that his face is red
KAW-LIGA, that poor ol' wooden head. ...
KAW-LIGA, was a lonely Indian never went nowhere
His heart was set on the Indian maiden with the coal black hair
KAW-LIGA - A, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer "YES" or "NO".
Then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' KAW-LIGA stayed
KAW-LIGA - A, just stands there as lonely as can be
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.

Actually, I found out he had been on Lexington since at least 1895 in front of Bodge Tobacco Shop and Elsea's Cigar Store. He was supposedly made of pewter.

It looks like he was bolted down so I guess pranksters could not try to take him.
The Indian on the Lexington side of the Square was indeed pewter, Mennehaha, aka Indian Hunter, by name. Purchased in 1974 by Mr. Smith who had several wooden Indians. Later sold to Hank Stram of the KCChiefs who put it in his office. There was also a wooden Indian on the Maple side of the Square by the 5 and 10 cent store and Lollas Shoe Shop.

Certainly! You are certainly wrong that is! Your HiBoy coupon will show up in the mail or the newspaper at my convenience.

Streets near Carlton & Benton included Columbus, Pine, Felton, and Washington.

Your car is still at 19th (formerly Carlton) & Vermont (formerly Benton).

Columbus is now 20th St.
Pine is now Norwood.
Felton is now Scott.
Washington is now Winner Road.

All of this is from a map produced by the Chicago & Alton Railroad, and amended several times up to 1943. The C&A ceased to exist in 1931, so these street names could be from anywhere in the 1930-1943 time period. The map only covers the area near the depot, from Sterling to just east of Crysler.

From the Examiner of 100 years ago:

When the late Harvey M. Vaile determined to build a handsome residence in Independence, he admired greatly the high ground on the west side of Liberty street owned by the late John T. Smith. He wanted five acres out of forty owned by Mr. Smith and offered $150 an acre for the five acres. Mr. Smith declined to sell, but offered to sell Mr. Vaile the forty for $75 an acre. Mr. Vaile declined the offered and bought across the street where the old Vaile mansion now stands. Mr. Smith afterward sold this same forty acres for $1500 an acre and it is now known as Pickwick place.

A day which will live in infamy in S. KC. Some friends were in town this week and the Ruskin Heights Tornado became a topic of discussion, only for me to realize this will be the SIXTIETH Anniversary. Look for several articles locally to appear in the next couple of weeks. For the Newbies here, we had a discussion 4 years ago, starting at Post #3077 and ironically MAD had recently indexed aerial photos of Jackson County coincidentally taken 3 weeks later, showing the path of the Cat 5 tornado.

Any recollections to add, Anyone?
