One of those job books said that it's harder to say no in person than it is over the phone or worse, through email.

Well second chance interviews don't exist, sorry. And reapplying won't work. They rejected you once, if you apply again, they'll reject you again. Sorry to put it so bluntly, but the good news is that lots of retail stores are pretty relaxed.

You should also remember that there are no right answers in interviews generally. You shouldn't need to study before an interview, except for knowing the company and it's products/general strategy quite well.
