My husband and I are thinking of relocating to the Jacksonville area (we are originally from Northeast PA and currently reside in Columbia, SC.) He has just earned his MBA in Healthcare (after changing careers) and I am an elementary teacher. His career counselor at the college, as well as many people we have spoken to, have mentioned Jacksonville as a good area for opportunity for both of us to find good jobs. Can anyone offer any info to support/refute that claim (his interests lie in hospitals and nursing or rehab facilities)?

Many thanks!

While I'm not in the healthcare field myself, my brother-in-law and a few friends are. From what they say, Jacksonville is a good area for the field. My BIL works at Baptist South, I have 2 friends that work at Baptist Beach, and 3 or 4 that work at Shands. Not sure what your husband's actual career is, but I'd say healthcare in general is a big thing in JAX.

As for your career, there are some good school systems in the JAX area. Jacksonville schools aren't great (depending on the area), but there are some good private and montessori schools in the area.

I agree with JimRom. I am not in healthcare either, but have friends in it. To add to the above post, Mayo Clinic is a very prestgious hospital and health center. Im sure its hard to get a job there because its highly sought after, but its located in a great area and is one of the top hospitals/healthcare organizations in the country.

Also, what are you looking for as far as living? Is the decision strictly job based, or are you also interested in jax as a city? If so, any details about the kinda neighborhood/housing/amenities you prefer could help us give more info and maybe aid your decision

Melissa,
Jacksonville is a great area for families. I live and work in the southside/mandarin area which is in the middle of all the hospitals. We FINALLY have our warm Florida weather back, this has been one of the coldest winters (but it probably has been for everyone in the US)....but I love it. Finally get to wear all my Golf sweaters and jackets that where buried in the closets. That's why people love Jacksonville, we have the different seasons, compared to southern florida.

The housing market here is a great time for BUYERS, there are some really nice deals around!! SO many first time buyers are realizing they can buy and have some equity in their home, for the same price as renting, (and not just throwing money away).

We'd love to help you. When will you be visiting?

Both my wife & I, and various family members, work in the healthcare indusrty (although that is a very broad term).

Jax does have a rather large % of healthcare positions. In fact, Jax is markting itself as "America's Health Center" : Medical Meetings & Conventions - Meeting Planners - Visit Jacksonville (http://www.visitjacksonville.com/meeting-planners/medical-meetings/ - broken link)

Due, for the most part, to the various types of more exclusive medical institutions such as Mayo Clinic, UF Proton Therpay Institute, Nemours, Wolfsons, JOI and having a variety of hospitals ranked highly for various treatments (St. Vincents-cardio & ortho, Shands-trauma, Baptist-childbirth, etc )

There is definitely an abundance of hospitals and health facilities here; as well as many new schools in developing areas; however, if you have children I would give this place a second thought. I've been here 13 yrs and the crime has escalated greatly. Even in the areas we thought were safe. Especially the crime against and involving children. It has also now been recently announced that our area is the worst in the COUNTRY for child porn. I am looking to leave here as soon as possible. We were going to buy a house but not now. Also, this city has held the state's murder record the past few years and has alot of police involved shootings. If you research this info you will find it to be true. Good luck!!

MelissaToy, My husband and I are also thinking about relocating to the JAX area ( closer to St. Augustine actually in Palencia) and I wondered if we are from the same hometown in NE PA? We currently live in NJ but I am from the Scranton area originally. We have been researching the area for a few months, visited in March and everthing seems to be checking out well. I am an executive recruiter in the pharmaceutical/biotech area and I do see a lot of healthcare related biz in the Jax area. Good luck! Maybe we can connect!
