Blind athlete killed in St. Augustine hit-and-run

Associated Press
Posted June 4, 2007

PHILADELPHIA -- A blind athlete was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Florida shortly after his team lost the championship game in a national "goalball" tournament.

Darryl D. Green, 24, of Philadelphia, was fatally struck by a white truck or sport utility vehicle around 1:15 a.m. Sunday near a major intersection in St. Augustine, police there said. Authorities said he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

John Mulhern, one of Green's teammates on the Delaware County Blind Sports Organization's Venom team, said Green had been hanging out with other athletes from the tournament when he went back to his hotel to use the bathroom.

Green apparently made a wrong turn while returning to the party and got lost, Mulhern said. He was on his cell phone with a teammate, who was trying to guide him back, when he was killed.

"The way the highway was there, there was no step-off," Mulhern said. "The last thing they heard was the drop of his phone."

Goalball is a game for the blind in which a three-member team tries to roll a ball -- which is filled with bells -- into a 30-foot goal.

Hit and runs sicken me. They seem to be a common occurence here in South Florida and it's just wrong. It's about time they cracked down on it (reckless driving in general). I would sentence anyone found guilty of killing someone by hit and run to life in jail (and I mean LIFE).

it happens here in orlando too. either today or yesterday, a road rage incident turned violent. someone honked at the person in front of them, and the person who apparently didnt go when the light turned green, got out of his car, and shot the person who honked in the stomach. it is sickening. note to self: keep gun in car for protection againt this bullsh$%!!!

i just want to make sure this isnt common in st augustine.

That is awful - hadn't heard of this until now.

I grew up in St. Aug and no, this is not a common occurence at all. Obviously this is a random crime so there's so saying...but as far as violence goes? St. Augustine is very, VERY peaceful - esp. considering it's so close to Jax which sees it's share of violence...

A busy intersection is no place for a blind person. A sighted person would have a hard time crossing a busy Florida intersection. That was a freak accident.

A person who had been drinking or other often won't stop because they would face manslaughter or whatever. People everywhere run for many reasons, they're stupid, scared, have open warrants etc. Happens everywhere.
