Hello! I'm hoping for some experienced opinions on good hotels (cleanl! convenient on route) and routes to take driving from NYC to Saint Augustine with children. Do you like to do the drive with one overnight or two nights on the road? Where do you recommend staying for those nights and where do you like to stay in or around St. Augustine? Thanks for your help!

south bound I usually stop at florence SC, take the exit for I-20 eastbound there'll be a bunch of fast food places and about 6 hotels to choose from, if you drive a decent speed it will take you about 9 hours from NYC to there, from there it will be another 6+ hours to st aug.
If you want to stop earlier Fayatteville NC is a good choice

Next month my wife and I are driving down from Vermont to Jacksonville and are going to take I-95 from Boston all the way down. It is an easy trip, all freeway and with plenty of places to stay. I think we are going to stop in Virginia the first night, South Carolina the next and then do the short three hour trip the last day.

We only have a cat to contend with so it is much easier for us than it will for you guys and kids.

The important thing to remember in planning your trip is to time your leaving to avoid the "rush hours" through the big cities
When we would drive from Phila we would leave 3 or 4 am to miss the DC traffic
My mother would make it 16 hours door to door from Phila to Jax

radioclown your going to want to avoid 95 through Phila between 7 & 9 it is about 3 hours from Phila to DC

If Stopping in Virginia...take time to stop at Fredericksburg & see the sites [if you are a history buff that is!]

We are planning on missing the major cities during rush hours and taking the loops around each city. Being a history buff it will be cool driving through Philly, but with the cat who must be obeyed in the car, stopping to see the sites won't happen.

Now the really important question: Where are the speedtraps?
