My family and I are moving to Jacksonville in June. My husband will be stationed at Mayport. We are looking to buy a home. We have been looking at St. John's County area and Northside. We have a 1 year old so we are looking for a nice and kid friendly neighborhood. Our price range for a new home is mid $150's. My husband and I have never been to Jacksonville, so we don't know the area. With the current market, we are trying to find a good deal on a home, but are not sure which area to go with. We don't want to be too close to base, but not that far either. We would like to live in a suburban area close to shopping and with good schools. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

St Johns County is probably too far from Mayport for you. Well, affordable St. Johns County, that is. Most of the schools within a decent driving distance of Mayport are at or near an A-rating. Check listings in zip codes 32224, 32246, and 32225. You can search Realtor.com by zip code, as well as other major real estate websites. Being that you are getting plenty of notice on the transfer date, you should be able to take advantage of the deals offered by many short sale listings, which can take a while to process. Just be sure to get lots of info from your real estate agent, who will hopefully be proficient in short sale transactions.

Congrats on your move!

Yeah I second that. Not sure why you would want to live on the Northside or in St. Johns county when there are plenty of family neighborhoods in those zips that would be like a 15 minute commute.

Well eventually my husband would be stationed at NAS Jacksonville. I also want to be in a good school system district and I hear St. John's has really good schools. Northside would I guess be inbetween the 2 bases.

Rent for the short-term in Mayport or Monument Road area and then investigate the housing on the westside close to NAS Jax. The commute from St. Johns County will be long and costly, plus St. Johns County prices are up there. The Northside commute is long as well and you have to be careful as far as crime is concerned.

Keeping that in mind, when you look at homes in 32224, 32246 and 32225, try and get as close to 9A/I295 as possible. Having easy access to 9A will be a huge benefit later if your husband ends up commuting to NAS Jax.
