I'm a musician relocating from New York and I'm wondering what the Jax music scene is like?

I play in Party/Wedding bands and like to know if there are many venue's for dancing with live music and if there is a market for Wedding Bands or if DJ's are primary.

Thanks All!
Regards,
Al

I would say that Jax's music scene is relatively small. But - as with all things here - Jax is so incredibly spread out that sometimes its hard for even longtime residents to get a feel for all the offerings in town.

The beaches and the in-town neighborhoods probably have the highest concentration of live music venues. It'll probably be more country and classic rock than you are used to in New York, but there's still a bit of diversity on average.

As far as I know, there are plenty of opportunities for wedding bands. I think it's just a matter of getting a good network of positive references.

everything joe said is spot on. you WILL need to keep your day job if you want to be a musician here but there is enough opportunity if it's just a hobby. get used to performing for free quite a few times before even thinking of asking for compensation. as for the wedding thing. word of mouth, wedding shows, and pounding the pavement is my suggestion. that's a hard thing to break into down here. off hand i would immediate talk to Freebird's at Jax Beach and EndoExo downtown.

Three Layers Cafe regularly has local musicans play/sing in the afternoons & evenings. It's an ideal breaking-in point as it's quite popular.
