I am an avid (recent returnee to the game) player and my assumption is that Florida = Tennis Player's Dream.

Does Jacksonville have an active tennis scene? Public v Private? Is it hard to find an empty, decent public court?

I am considering a move to Jax and having an active tennis scene would be a deal sealer...

Thoughts?

ATP headquarters is in PVB and there is a lively tennis scene here, but much of it is in the private clubs here, you could contact the ATP people and maybe they can help

There's a very active women's circuit throughout communities -- I can only speak of Eagle Harbor since I'm not in the circuit (yet), but we have A1-2, B1-2, C1-2, D1-2 teams that play every week. I don't know about men's leagues.

I honestly don't know about public courts --- that's not to say they don't exist. But I do know that most communities have courts.

The Williams YMCA in Mandarin on San Jose Blvd. has very active play - also 20 courts, many lit. I think they have all the same leagues as Eagle Harbor. Jax is very active tennis town, with some very excellent players.

Does anyone have an idea about Membership fees at private clubs? Around where I live...there was a "middle-scale" club that was charging $70 a month (year contract). I'd prefer to play in various public leagues and join a club after my first year in Jax...

You can join the Y for about 60 a month or something like that. No initiation fee, no contracts. They really have a fabulous tennis facility, in addition to an olympic size outdoor pool, an incredible workout facility. It's the best gym I've ever seen,. This particular Y (in Mandarin) was formerly a tennis club. They have har tru courts, and several of them are lit.

Default Yes, we have public tennis courts in Jax

Here's a link to our public courts. Leave it to our Parks Dept to not update the website , I know there is at least one other public court that it night-lighted - I added it after the link:

Tennis

In addition to the courts mentioned, you can add:

Huffman Park
On Huffman Blvd, off of Beach Blvd (right next door to FCCJ...just up the road from the Saint Johns Town Center)

15 acre park, newly built (open for about 1+ year now)
lighted tennis courts & basketball courts
nature trail
on site security

Huffman is a really nice park.

another freebee is on Race Track road in St. John's county - just over the Julington Creek bridge in Mandarin. It's also lit. An amazing park.
