The Master Plan of revising the "Emrald Necklace" of parks streching from Downtown into Springfield is beginning to take shape.

It will take a couple years to secure adequate funding, but the city sees this as a key step in making Downtown a "go to" destination on par with other typical big cities, and what should be the icing on the cake, so to speak, for the the Historic Springfield area.

From North to South (near Shands on 8th Street):

A little further South near in Klutho Park:

Further Southeast near Behtel Baptist Chruch & Karpelles Museum:

Finally, along Union Street (Downtown) & Confederate Park:

a FREE dog park (only one in the city). with lighting, benches, shade, lighted basketball court, small & large breed parks, dog and people water fountains, and a playground soon to come.

it can get muddy in places when it rains, that's the only drawback.

The dog park off penman road is free as well but that might be considered Jacksonville beach, not sure. Nice to know about the parks though. These forums can get boring when you and I are not debating something but latley I have to agree with everything! Nice job.

Yes, the Penman Road park is in Jax Beach.

The Dog Park on Confederate between Market & Hubbard is the only free dog park in the city, like I said. =P

Transform Hogans Creek into major downtown asset

This is a city of great potential.

It's high time to begin turning that potential into reality instead of pretty dream pictures tucked away in binders and stored on dusty shelves.

A good place to begin is Hogans Creek downtown.

Thankfully, a group of people, including City Councilman Johnny Gaffney, who represents the area, and members of the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council, are doing just that.
There are 27 acres of park land surrounding the creek.

With much of the park designed in the 1920s by Henry Klutho, it once was a jewel for downtown. It has now fallen into disrepair.

Other cities would love to have such an asset downtown. We've let it sit in a shabby state for too long.

Jennifer Holbrook, a SPAR board member, talks excitedly about the possibilities for the park.
A master plan is being developed and should be completed next month. Design work could then begin.

There are hurdles to overcome.

Paw Park in Jax Beach, Ivey Road Park (Southside/Arlington), Beach Blvd Humane Society (being rebuilt after fire)...so we do have other free dog parks in Jacksonville. Just over the line in St. John's county we have Davis Paw Park & Treaty Paw Park.

All of the above are free and open to the public.

Ivey Road just completed construction it seems, that's a boone for that area of town. Are all the other facets of park construction completed as well? It should be nice.

That's 2 brand new dog parks in less than a year in Jax.....

I don't believe the Humane Society one is open yet, as it's not rebuilt. Jax Beach is it's own municpality, that's why I didn't include it.
