I am so jealous I haven't seen any monarch cats yet
I planted a lot of seeds a couple moths ago and some of the ones that froze have come back .
if you are looking at taking cuttings for propagation wait a bit till the flowers turn to seed pods
a easy way to collect the seeds so you can plant them where you want, is to take a knee hi and place it over the green pods when they "ripen" the seeds will fall into the knee hi instead of blowing around the yard.

Another thing to remember is Monarchs are milkweed specific. Meaning some will on lay eggs on the red flowers(which from your pictures looks like what you have) one vs the yellow & orange ones and the cats when the eggs hatch will only eat that one.

really love the color of your red hibiscus
If it gets big enough I would love a cutting I could trade some black & blue slavia rootings These attract not only butterflies but also humming birds
I was very successful with propagating regular hibiscus

What makes those tub thingies hydroponic, Karla?

Remember, I'm the newbie on gardening. I'm flying up to get my mom from NJ on May 30. We'll be back on May 31. She wants to plant tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. I'm thinking a container garden might be the trick because I don't have a garden etc.

Also, I still want that citrus. Is it better to wait now or work on getting it sooner? No, I don't know what kind. My mom said... How about one of those that grows 2 kinds. I said I didn't think you said that was a good idea. You being YOU, Karla.

Ok, I'm hungry for pizza now. LOL

I have them filled with perlite there is no dirt at all ,there are holes about 3" up along the bottom.
The water stays in the bottom part and is absorbed into the perlite
I use a mixture of water & fertilizer

We have used these at school for the past couple years and they have done really well

Here is the link from last months new leaf that give more info

I know this is the gardening thread but I'd like to post this picture to see if anyone can tell me what the heck these things are... I think these are the adolescent stage of the black jumpy legged looking things with the red stripes that I have all over.

Please ignore the lovely lawn... we (TruGreen and I ... well really just TruGreen) are working on that.

Yes, that is it. UGH....

Eastern Lubber Grasshopper - Romalea microptera - BugGuide.Net
Black grasshopper with red trim - Romalea microptera - BugGuide.Net

Suggestions I've read are to hand-pick them and put them in a bucket of soapy water or a trash bag. They are resistant to pesticides once fully grown but the little ones are more susceptible.
