I am a professional IT (Information Technology) project manager (PM) who leads a large team of designers and developers who build nationally recognized high-traffic web sites (some of which you may have visited). The problem is that I don't see any similar opportunities in Jacksonville. When I search Yahoo or Monster or Google or the local JAX newspapers for open jobs in JAX, I see things such as: "truck driver" or "security guard" or "assistant manager at donut shop." These are highly respectable (and necessary... and important) jobs, but they are not commensurate with my experience and education. Where are the $100K+ IT management positions? Where are the Fortune 500 companies?

I really want to make the move, but I need to find a decent career down there!

Thanks for all the great responses by the way. Please keep 'em coming.
Shawn - have you explored the option of a virtual office? Can you stay with your current employer, work from JAX and fly up to the City a few times a month? OR... work from JAX and fly down to Miami a few times a month (if you obtain a position within a company located in Miami)? Also, are you PM certified and if so, have you tried networking through PMI?

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. Mitsui started shipping last year, and Hanjin just inked the deal to complete their port in 2011 or something like that.

good luck, shawn.

I'm not PMI certified, but I have ~14 years' experience as a Business Analyst and Project Manager. For what it's worth, I also earned my MBA back in '95.

I just read that JAX is the foreclosure capitol of the US - and the job market is a disaster. That's truly discouraging. If I buy now, I have to hope that it's near the bottom, but it looks as though it could fall some more. This is by far the biggest decision of my life. Plus, I don't want to screw things up for my wife, who's counting on me to make things BETTER, not WORSE!

Any possibilities with Deutsche Bank? Half a year ago they announced that Jax would be their Southeast US hub with plans to bring about 1000 jobs to the city in the next three years.

Check Fidelity Information Services (Fortune 500, located near downtown Jax).

This really illustrates the danger of Forbes' faulty rankings.

Look more carefully at the actual data. Jacksonville will have one of the lowest foreclosure rates in the entire state!!! The (stupid) reason that Forbes is ranking Jax #1 is because they project we will have the "largest percentage INCREASE in Foreclosures"

Of course, since our Foreclosure rates are already super-low, and will remain relatively reasonable, the ranking is totally pointless.

But most people only read headlines. They don't look at data sets. So that one article has caused some crazy misperceptions.

Joe's right about numbers being deceiving. I recall a story in my college campus newspaper about how participation in a particular group had tripled over the prior year. Come to find out, the group grew from two people to a whopping six people...but hey, that's a 300% increase, right?

Point being, numbers without context are worthless.

Yup you are right. Mitsui actually has been sharing a terminal with Horizon Lines while their's is being built.

We're looking at Tampa now, but haven't given up on Jacksonville yet. I really loved Jacksonville, but am worried about finding good work. Maybe this isn't the best time to move (during a recession).

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the comments and help. I must say that the folks down in Florida are very friendly! Thanks.
