... and before you say the symphony is too high brow, take a look.

Symphony Hall was rockin' last night to the tunes of the Eagles. Next season's "jean n classics" series will feature music of Elton John, Rolling Stones and the Who, and James Taylor. How can a symphonic orchestra do rock-n-roll?? Easy. Picture the orchestra playing along with a rock band with lead and backup vocalists. Definitely not ho hum, especially the electronic high tech space age violin and oboe.

If you like opera, the symphony does it (Puccini's Turandot). If you like the classics, the symphony does it (Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Mozart's Requiem, etc.). If you like Pops, the symphony does it (Abbamania, Ben Vereen (remember him of the Chicken George fame?), etc.). If you like the movies and Broadway, the symphony does it (West Side Story with the performers from the Alhambra Dinner Theatre). If you'd like to expose your kids to orchestra music, the symphony does it (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Let's Dance!, the old-time favorite Peter and the Wolf, etc.) And if you like rock-n-roll, as I said, the symphony does that, too.

As an aside, it's not all about just sitting there and listening. This season's Music of Star Wars brought to the stage live and in person Darth Vader, R2D2, a host of Storm Troopers, and there was even a light sabre matchup between the Jedis and the bad guys.

And don't think you have to get your tuxedos and evening gowns out of moth balls. Acceptable attire is everything from diamonds to tropical shirts over shorts.

You'll also find that ticket prices won't make you choke. Plus you can find free on-street parking if you don't mind a short stroll for a few blocks.
