Hi there,
I'm in my early 20's and am a single lady, haha. I am interested in moving to the Jacksonville area sometime in the near future. Only thing is, I am currently living in northern Michigan. So I have not been to the area myself to check it out. Just going on internet research and hear say from people I know. Lots of people say good things about the area, and I could definately use some warmth and sunshine about now! haha. I currently work retail, and could hopefully get a job transfer down there. Although I would probably be looking for additonal, and/or a better job to help pay with rent. I was wondering if anyone has any advice about the area, where the safer places are, etc. I'd like to move, just don't know how to go about it, since I'd need a place to stay before I headed down. But getting an apt without being there would be hard. What are some pros/cons of the area? Is it easy to meet new people? I know some areas people are very standoff-ish and not too friendly with strangers.lol.

Thanks so much for your time and hope to hear from you guys!!

Sure, it's easy to meet people if you spend time in places/neighborhoods that are more social.

Pros: It's cheap. Beach. Cool, eclectic downtown-ish neighborhoods. Lots of outdoors things to do. Mid-sized city amenities. Diverse range of people & interests depending on where you live. Good arts scene. Passionate sports city.

Cons: Sort of behind-the-times on many policy issues. Very spread out. Mostly very suburban/bland. Few fun neighborhoods. Public transit is awful. Florida Gators fans are everywhere.

You listed that in the wrong category.

It's hard to be a passionate sports city when you're only professional team sucks and hardly anyone goes to the games or really cares.

That's an interesting opinion.

After thinking about it, they have sold a metric ton of Gators junk around here, ...if that's what you mean.

Yeah, Gators and Georgia gear... Who are these Jaguars you speak of? Oh, that team that Teebow doesn't like, right?

The big pro for me here is the outdoor activities; especially on the water. Boating, surfing, kayaking, jet skis, fishing... tons of that. Also lots of biking.

You say you're in retail, if by better job you are referring to higher-end retail then St Johns Town Center is the place you want to be. Plenty of apartments around there. You could also split the difference between there and the beach and be at either in 10 minutes or so. I'm sure everyone will tell you to find a job before moving. Unemployment is pretty high here; something like 9.4% IIRC.

As for meeting people, I dunno. Meetup.com has been my best resource so far.
