So, in another thread I posted I have had a job offer and am considering moving down from NJ. Fortunately/unfortunately, they need me to start in a week so I'll have to go down without the family and crash with some friends. The good thing is it enables me to check things out before uprooting my family. The bad news is, I'll be without my family for a bit. I'll miss my wife and boys but I digress...

Anyway, I am also a photographer--pro--who's been earning money on the side for a while. I specialize in sports photography and am wondering what the photographer scene is like in Jax. Having lived in NC for a number of years when I was younger, I know they love their HS sports (football) down in the South. I'm guessing it's the same in Jax?

Also wondering if there are other photographers around here who can talk about some of the better places to go shoot photos. Although I specialize in sports photography, I also do the traditional stuff like portraits, etc. I'm always on the lookout for locations to shoot.

Thanks.

I'm a photographer, but it's not my "real" career at all. Wife/I have a small in-home business of selling photo prints, but very little-to-nothing going on now with that. When you say you are a "pro", do you get a Contract with an organization or someone to take photos or what? I don't have anything like that. There are events here to take photos of......The Air & Sea Spectacular (air show), St John's River Poker Run, 4th of July and New Years Eve Fireworks displays at the beach and over the St John's River. This last weekend I was at Confederate Park/downtown for "Dog Days In The Park 2010" and took numerous photos of the dogs there. And, since we own a 20' boat, I try to take some pics while out on the water. Need more info, send me a PM.

The unique, historic, eclectic neighborhoods of Riverside, Avondale, Springfield, San Marco, and Ortega. They are decidedly different from the rest of Jacksonville.

Contact www.riverside-avondale.com & www.smpsjax.com & www.myspringfield.org about specific locations in these areas (there are many, depending on what you want).

Other areas that may interest you are Atlantic Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Murray Hill, Venetia, San Jose, Fernadina Beach, and St. Augustine.

Also www.metrojacksonville.com would also be a good place to ask your question........it's frequented by at least a few professional photographers.

Events that you may enjoy to photograph or to simply gain inspirartion from would be the Riverside Arts Market: www.riversideartsmarket.com and Downtown's Art Walk: Downtown Jacksonville : Art Walk (http://downtownjacksonville.org/things-to-do/downtown-vision-events/art-walk-landing - broken link).

This also may be of interest, Painting the Region, an upcoming week-long event, as any areas worthy of painting are probably worthy of being photod too: http://www.paintingtheregion.com/artist_info.html

Thanks. Unfortunately, at the moment, it's not my main source of income--maybe someday... But I do ok. As I mentioned, I specialize in sports photography--especially MMA. Because of this, I don't usually have a contract but do work with contracts when I can (protects me and the customer). I'm under contract for an MMA show this weekend in Newark, NJ (driving down on Sunday to start a new job). I'm also shooting a TKD school Saturday morning here. Both of these are contracted events.

Just shot Ring of Combat in Atlantic City over the weekend. Not a contracted event but I usually make a few bucks off selling photos to the fighters, schools and sponsors.

Since I also do portrait work I like to do it on location and am always looking for good locations. Obviously, it will take a while to get some business down there but I've got to start.

Thanks.
