Well I've never earned big money at a job but there it is - a few million in RE equity. I don't think I could have done that with stock investing. In fact, I've been maxing out the 401K for many, many years (have almost 25 years at my job) and it's less than 20% of my net worth.

i found the reverse, since 1987 our fidelity insight growth mix is up 1200% .
our home we sold here in nyc which was also bought in 1987 was up about 250% over the same time frame

Well I really didn't get started investing in stocks until 1987! I had a bit before but had to sell in the 80s bust here in Texas to hold on to my properties. So I got all of them cheap - both before and after the bust - under $100K.

You mean actual real properties, not REIT stocks. Do you mind me asking "how" you did it? Did you lever up and buy other properties, etc?
