Script kiddies do it to show off to other script kiddies or to flex their 'e-peens' as it is called. These sort of attacks are called un-targeted. They have read about some exploit and downloaded some tool, or googled some hack and employ it, then run to their little forums and show off.
Targeted hackers are either after some data like Credit Card info or Social Security Numbers or want to cripple a website or network of a particular company such as in net-terrorism. Targeted hackers are typically very good at what they do and don't do it to show off to other 14 year old kids. These guys know how to program and know the inner workings of networks and computers very well. They aren't little kids that found out how to run an SQL injection attack on wordpress v3.1 and know a smattering of shell scripting.
There are children smarter than their parents, who can't be arsed to learn how to change the time of the VCR let alone how to change the resolution on their desktop. Script kiddies are what these kids are called.
REAL hackers tend to have years and years of experience (usually enterprise level experience). Script kiddies know a few dos commands, MIGHT know some intermediate level PERL or vbscript coding and probably know enough to sound smarter than they really are.
Know how to circumvent enterprise level firmware, switches and routers and access files and records without getting caught? No. Sorry, this isn't the movies.
Question. Are people who learn how to harvest, steal, music, programs and the like from the internet considered "hackers"? I used to know some college guys who would say things like, "We're not paying for no stinking new version of Windows, we'll find one." Is that a hacker, or is a real hacker someone who inflicts damage on others?

Those are just pirates.
Seriously! They are pirating software. What else would we call em?
