Here at C-D they don't and have that little encouraging banner telling you to add new info to a thread but on most forums, they get mad when you post in a thread older than 3 months or so. I've been warned, threatened and suspended on other forums for doing that but I don't understand the rationale. It's not like I was just posting "bump"; I would try to participate in the discussion.

Right, old topics are temptingly listed at the bottom of the page, and the topics are related to what you've just been reading about. So it's easy to get drawn into that topic. But for some reason on city data people like to keep the conversations fresh and new. Resurrecting old threads is usually in vain, since the original poster is probably long since gone.

Since City Data encourages it, users of this site shouldn't object to the poster that does so.
It is pretty silly, however, to address the original poster without checking to see how old the thread is.
It's reasonable if just adding to the subject matter if it is of general interest and not particular to the OP.

Bumping old threads validates the content of that thread in the eyes of Google Search.
As a result, Google Search ranks CityData high for many search terms, drawing traffic to the site.
Traffic growth is important to CD, as it helps increase the value/cost of advertising on CD.
That increased advertising cost becomes increased revenue for ownership, and allows CD to let regular, logged in members participate ad-free.

Some posters will answer an old OP because they don't notice the date, which is clearly marked. Others will resurrect a thread because the topic is still interesting, or they want to update the contributors of that thread with fresh news.

As far as getting mad? Some people just enjoy being cranky about little or nothing in life.

because all forums have both kinds of members .. those that will chastise you for commenting on an old thread and those that are quick to say you have just started a new thread on an old topic .. an most are the same persons ...

It is an easy mistake for a new member...unfamiliar with the format. I am still new to forums, and didn't really even look into them until 2010. I still get tripped up, if I don't realize it may be an old thread.

We should all agree to comeback and bump this thread a year or two in the future.
