To make a long story short, I'd like to send an email message to about 5 people but need to do so anonymously. If they were able to determine whom it came from or even able to narrow down the geography via an IP address, there would likely be reprisals.

However, I'd like to be able to receive responses to the email.

Is there a way to do this from your PC without any traceability?

Thanks

Email headers will just show the path of SMTP servers. So as long as you don't do anything that will bring in the authorities or put anything identifiable on the account, you should be fine. For example - you setup a new account with any of the free services (gmail, yahoo, outlook etc.), and you just put John Doe as the owner. Your message header will show that it went from gmail -> your company server-> and the sender/recipient info.

On the flip side, I get some email from some unknown person, the chance of me reading it going to be pretty low. And even lower that I'll respond to it.

I suggest you don't do something like this as it is not worth it. ANd you'll like get in trouble with the law. But do it from your local library.

It is easy to open an email address under an assumed name. However, the recipients will be able to trace to at least the city where the terminal you use connects online, such as a library. You could drive to another city and use a library terminal there. Or make an alias account, write the letter, put it in the Drafts folder of your alias email account, and then ask a trusted friend in a distant city to open your email account (just tell him your password), open the draft folder, and send the messages. Any replies will come back to the inbox of your alias account, which you can access.

To prevent all the recipients from knowing who else got the letters, be sure to use bcc (blind carbon copy) or else compose and address each one individually.
