whats the best free software to convert audio cassette tapes to digital format? my father has really old cassette tapes (early 80s) that he would like to listen to again and again, and im worried of their fragility. so i want to convert those to digital files. he recently bought a stereosystem that has a cd/cassette player with USB feature, but since it's a slightly older model, i dont think it has a built-in software.

would really appreciate the techies' input on this.

If you hook up the system to a computer, can you play the content of the tapes via the computer ?

If yes, then maybe what I use will work for you.
i-Sound Recorder for Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Not free, but as with everything else, you get what you pay for ...

Audacity is supposed to be free, but if it is good, I do not know.
You have to try it yourself.

All I know is that i-Sound, does its thing, straight out of the box.
No additional plug-ins or whatever needed.
The only thing you have to *learn*, is when to start the *record* button ...

What does converting audio tapes have to do with the internet?

because it's all about downloading software from the internet, so that's why i thought of putting it here, unless you have a better idea where this should be put. i'd be more than glad if you could ask the mods to have this moved elsewhere.

As you're seeking help with computer software the best place would be the computer forum. The mods will move it if they see fit.

I've used audacity for recording from line in and microphone sources before, and it's pretty good for what it does.

If the content is commercial music, why not just obtain the MP3 versions of these songs?

That would be the best option as far as sound quality.

my dad is an amateur singer (but just because you're not a pro singer you suck at it), and has recorded tons of songs himself, both covers and originals. i wouldnt have asked this if the tapes were not his own recordings. my concern is the recordings were done amateurly too, not in a professional recording studio with all the equipment. he just had his own rigging in the basement (the quietest part of the house), and recorded at nighttime when everything else around was quiet. but they sound decent at least. it's just that if those recordings were compressed to digital form, they would be distorted especially because of with how they were recorded in the first place. that's why i asked which free software would do the least distortion. otherwise, i can try to cough up a bit of money (but not too much as i'm on a tight budget) to get the better software.
