And what are the 5 worst? I understand north is more desirable than south. What else is there to know? Is there a "cool" neighborhood? A snobby "old money" one? Others of distinction?

I could spend a lot of time responding but what is the point? Are you thinking of buying or renting or are you collecting info for an article? We cannot be specific to your situation without info. It is the same as saying "where should I live?".

What is your definition of best or worst or cool or whatever?

So really you are expecting a lot of the posters to this forum for very little info back.

We're looking to move to Indy and we have been pushed toward Fishers and Carmel. I have a 2 year old and would prefer a more city experience.
I really just wanted the opinion of the locals. In my experience, in any town there is ususally some agreement on the reputation of certain neighborhoods. It's the sort of thing that can take a while to learn and I was hoping for a crash course. I AM looking for GENERALIZATIONS. It's not that I would feel beholden to these judgements. It's just helpful to know what locals are often thinking...

There are a whole lot of threads directly on point that have answered this question hundreds of times. Each is full of generalizations. I know because I have responded to most of them. I am just tired of repeating myself over and over.

Indianapolis is huge and yes, there are, in my opinion, good, bad, old money, cool, etc. neighborhoods. I have given the same info over and over again. Unless you can afford $3+ million for a home, I would not spend time telling you about old money hoods or country club hoods.

Save us all a lot of time and effort and be specific on what you need or want. Some people with 2 year olds are concerned with public schools and some already know they will pay (and can afford) private schools. This makes a huge difference on what is recommended. Without this info, why would we suggest an inner city cool neighborhood? Ditto on how much you could afford. Get it?

I am just tired of repeating the same info over and over.

I agree, we need to know what you are wanting to spend. And a closer idea of what u are looking for..... personally I love my neighborhood but some people find it to be a bad area, but it is good enough for me.... and not all south is bad, you have southport/ greenwood to the south. But remember there is crime everywhere. Some areas just cover it up better.....

I'm not looking for an area to live in on this post. I just want the reputations of neighborhoods to understand the city better. I've spent hours looking at old posts but the info is often very specific to the OP's particular needs. I am really wanting generalizations.

Any neighborhood on the far northeast side that begins in 'Admirals' is pretty good and a place I could live in. There are usually no shootings or violent crimes.

However, there was a break-in the other night near Fall Creek and Brooks School Road. The guy entered through an unlocked garage service door, held a knife to a woman, raped and robbed her. Technically that area would be in Fishers.

Default 5 best neighborhoods

1. Meridian Kessler (1930's homes with lots of walkable retail/restaurants/cafes)
2. Broad Ripple (Lots of bungalows, bars, restaurants, boutique retail)
3. Arden (Lots of mature trees, walkable to Broad Ripple)
4. Meridian Hills (Just north of Broad Ripple, 1940's homes, bigger yards)
5. Williams Creek (Big homes and yards but close to Broad Ripple and Nora)
6. Mass Ave (Artsy downtown vibe)
7. Old Northside (Beautiful Victorians just north of downtown)

So you want to live in an area with high taxes, high poverty, poor to mediocre schools, and higher crime? If so, make sure you live in the City of Indianapolis municipality.
