Hello everyone,

I have searched your posts quite a bit, but please do forgive me if I ask questions already answered.

I noticed the cheap cost of living in indy and suburbs. It is quite amazing. How are the property taxes and other taxes? The housing prices in Noblesville, Fishers, etc are insane. (cheap) We are originally from Denver, PHX and Salt Lake City.

Can anyone recommend a job site for the metro area? How is the job market?

How is the crime in general? Is traffic bad?

Thanks

Dallas

Which profession are you in? I don't know of any local job sites, besides the larger ones plus individual corporate sites. They probably exist, though.

Traffic is not that bad, nor is crime. The area is a bit spread out, so you'll want to live near work.

Living costs are lower in Indy metro than many other areas, including those you have lived in. I think the Gov limited property taxes recently, so they shouldn't be that bad. Given that the tax burden is based on the home assessment and the home prices are not that high, property taxes should be reasonable as well. One factor that drives COL is the local Economy. In that light, Indy (a less expensive place to live) will not have as wide or diverse an Economy as more expensive areas (in general). Healthcare and Insurance seem big, plus the basic stuff that all areas have. It's not going to be as big in Tech as places like Denver and PHX, nor are its Legal and Finance fields as strong as some of the major cities.

It really depends what you value. If you have children and want a safe place to live with good schools all for a fair price, Indy is a good fit. For people without family, significant others and those who like more excitement and entertainment options (as well as a more diverse Economy), Indy may not be the best fit. I don't know the area that well, but have found it a bit boring.

Are you considering a move to entertain a job offer or mainly b/c it's less expensive?

Well I am former law enforcement. But my education is in psychology/counseling. So basically I'd be looking for human services jobs.

We have three young children. The move would be for family. Cheap, safe place to raise the kids.

It sounds like Indy would be perfect for you. The only piece of advice I have is to make sure you have a job lined up before you move. The job market is tight here too and your salary might be a little lower than it was in Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix. Careerbuilder.com or Indiana career connect are good sites to get an idea of what is currently available.

If you move here, welcome to Indiana.

As I understand, property taxes in Indy are on the high side (at least in Marion county). The job market is competitive but is booming in areas like health care.

Crime in the suburbs is a very small concern. In town, there are certain areas to stay away from. But if you're looking in Fishers and Noblesville, you have little to worry about. Traffic is bad, but probably not any worse than you're already used to.
