Welcome! There are a couple of Columbus people here, so I think between the two of us, we may be able to help out.

Well, schools ... we have public and private. You'll get pros and cons from all. My 3 kids go to public school here and we are very happy. There's are private Catholic, Lutheran and Christian schools as well as 2 highly regarded Montessori schools. There are 3 highly rated public elementary schools, Parkside, Southside and Rock Creek. There are also technology based "signature academies" that are run by the public school system. You have choices here, that's for sure.

Columbus is very family friendly. Lots of parks and a great trail system for biking and walking. We've been here for a little over 3 years and are very happy.

Default Former Columbus person

I used to live in Columbus when I was in 2nd-8th grade. It was a lot of fun, growing up there. It's big enough that there is a lot of good shopping and interesting, unique shops, great parks, but it's also very family-friendly. It' very "Indiana", in that people have country-life at their roots very often. There is a lot of architecture there, the city is famous for many of its buildings having been created by very famous architects, so the arts are pretty important for Columbus.

The schools are very good, too. I was a child when I was there, so I can't speak so much from an adult viewpoint. All I know is that I was happy there and there was always plenty to do and see. I liked that there was a good dose of country-life mixed into the town life. It's not far from Brown County Park, which is a wonderful place to be in the fall when the leaves change.

Have a wonderful time exploring your new surroundings! Welcome to Indiana!

this may help give you a feel for the physical area http://www.naturalheritageofindiana.org/learn/regions.html Columbus would be in the Scottsburg Lowland, just a little south of the southernmost extent of the glaciers.
