As a whole, and all things considered, I believe Illinois is slowly recovering.

Reconstruction on the Chicago's Circle Interchange will begin this year. It and work on the Millenium Reserve will bring nearly $500M into the area while creating thousands of jobs.

Illinois is ranked fifth in the nation for new and expanded corporate facilities. Illinois moved up two spots from last year’s seventh place ranking, according to the annual analysis by Site Selection magazine, one of the nation’s premier corporate real estate and economic development publications. In 2012 322 corporate facilities located or expanded in Illinois.

On another note:
The greater Peoria region exported more merchandise per capita than any place in the United States at nearly $30,0000.00 worth of products per person, according to the International Trade Administration, a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It amounts to $11.1B or about 20% of all Illinois exports.

The U.S. Maritime Administration designated the Peoria region as an origin point for a pioneering barge service that moves industrial goods from Peoria to deepwater ports on the Gulf of Mexico. It was chosen due its dominance in the manufacturing sector. This exports from the Peoria area include manufacturers such as CAT, Komatsu, Case New Holland, Kress, Excel, Keystone and others. (The Port of Peoria offers rail, water, air and land transport facilities and services.)

As for total expansions it looks like IL is behind TX and PA. If Illinois had three large cities like Texas it would be a different picture.

But it does not. So we're not. Hey, do you know that if the Cubs had decent pitchers, fielders that actually made defensive plays and hitters that actually drove in runs they might not suck...

Is it really something to happy about that THREE other "rust belt" states were ranked higher than Illinois?

Oh yes it is. Hey here's tip: Save money; don't buy a season ticket.

Umm, of course? IL ranked higher than these high-growth states like NC or UT or GA or the oil-booming ND or the giants like CA and NY.

With all due respect, Chet and linicx, I couldn't agree more linicx. With everything that's going on in Illinois, this country, and the world at large...I would have to say that reading this post this morning made me excited for Illinois, this country, and the world in general. For better or worse, we are ALL in this together.

Whatever little scrap of positive news there is about Illinois moving up a mere two spots I will be happy in this even though there were THREE other "rust belt" states ranked higher than Illinois...I'll take it!

A rising tide lifts ALL boats!

Best regards to you both, sincerely

Illinois is really in a good spot, we aren't a sunbelt state going through explosive unsustainable growth and we aren't an oil boom state that will crash in the future when the black stuff runs out. I really hope it gets better, it would encourage staying and financial prosperity.

IL has never been a true rust belt state due to Chicago and its Fortune 500 companies. Yes there are town that have not done as well, but the larger areas outside of Chicago such as B-N, Springfield, Peoria, Champaign, Moline/Rock Island, not only did not fail they are recovering.

Every state has it issues.

With a new global company moving in this fall, we'll just move up the scale one company at at time.
