Why would anyone think some percentage of those guys hanging out for work in parking lots are legal? None are legal. None.
The good news is with the current economic Depression our country is in, there is little work for those illegals. So many are returning back home to Mexico. At this time there is more work in Mexico then in the USA. Those who remain here are here for the good schools and free medical care.
well i did some research with day laborers (thru a world class public university) and while we did have citizens(black and brown), naturalized citizens, or temp visa holders in our sample, these guys were the outliers.
closer to 95% (in the Los Angeles area sample) had no papers.
they were easy targets for abuse, including sexual abuse. in ceratin areas, gay white men would troll the parking lots lookin for guys to do "work". they would tell them one thing(tiling job) but the real job would be something else (screwing a light bulb!).
once at the work place the men would be offered beer, drugs and eventually sex.
most were annoyed that what could have been a day of work turned out to be nothing more than a vile proposition.
some guys did accept those propositions. it was easy money.
anyhow. when i need someone to help me move some heavy furniture, and i cant get the neighbors or fam to help, grabbing a couple guys from the home depot is a good option. i did a roofing job this year and i needed help loading the shingles into the bed of my truck. these guys in the parking lot helped me and i paid them about 10 bucks(split). they then went back to waiting unde a palm tree.
it reminded me of when those kids at luckys or safeway supermarket would take your shopping cart or bags to your car for a quarter/50 cents.
i wasnt concerned with their legal status, or age for that matter back then. what mattered was getting that immediate help and in turn compensating them.
i wonder why they stopped letting kids escort shoppers? maybe someone complained.
OneAngryTaxPayer: The income tax does not support anything other than the interest on the federal reserve note. The Federal Reserve is as Federeal as Federal Express, i.e., they are a private entity. They loan the money they print with interest. We'd be much better off if we went back to the gold standard and/or congress took back their resposnibility of printing money.
Saying that, yes we do pay our taxes, one would be a fool not too. Even the FBI is afraid of the IRS.
Good, glad you do. My reference is to Illegals hitting the Home Depot to do work for them all paid in cash. Let me give you an example from a City I lived in, Greeley Co. North of 9th ave was pretty much an illegal City. All of the transactions were in cash and about the only thing they bought outside of that entire area was gas. It looked like a swap meet.
I would NEVER allow a stranger to enter my house to perform any task. I consider that as crazy as giving a hitchhiker a ride. Yes, I assume most men loitering in Home Depot parking lots are illegal.

So you live near where some of the raids took place?

Benicar I just think it is pretty darn bold for people to loiter for work at Home Depot unless they have permission.
Near my home is a long commercial street where at least 100 Hispanic Day Laborers stand along the street over a mile area and wait for work. On occasion I do have work that they could do, and a neighbor tells me that they will work for very little. Maybe as little as $5.00 an hour cash.
I think of using them but assume that most if not all are illegal aliens and out of principal decided that I would not enable them.
What are your thoughts about using Day Laborers for jobs around your home and yard? Do you assume they are illegal aliens?
I've seen a black guy with other day laborers looking for work. Maybe he might be illegal from Africa or somewhere

I've seen a black guy with other day laborers looking for work. Maybe he might be illegal from Africa or somewhere because he had a very thick accent (he thought I was trying to pick him up). Who knows?
