Chicago – Leaders from the Mexican Community along with representation from the Illinois Department of Secretary of State will gather together to educate the Mexican community on the legal requirements for Drivers License in the State of Illinois.
According to a Chicago police officer in the Little Village area, local law enforcement does not recognize as valid any driver’s license from foreign countries. The officer said this was in accordance with Illinois State Statues.
Jesus Vargas ,march10, an Immigration Community Activist stated, “The State of Illinois must issue you a driver’s license in order for it be legal. We know the reality of the undocumented community and this is a Fraud to offer us these worthless license!”
The Illinois Secretary of State office issues “Temporary Visitor Driver’s License” (TVDL) for non-citizens of the United States who have been granted temporary legal entry into this country. This TVDL does not apply to individuals who are undocumented in this country.
Ernesto J. Martinez a Communications Specialist from the Illinois Secretary of State stated, “According to “(625 ILCS 5/) Illinois Vehicle Cod on Sec. 1-116.1. Driver’s License: Any license to operate a motor vehicle issued under the laws of this State”. Issues driver’s licenses, commercial drive’s licenses and ID cards are legally issued only at 136 Illinois certified Drivers Services Facilities Statewide. For more info you can call 217-782-6212 , 312-814-2975 or

It is understood that these Mexican Drivers License being sold in the community have no value for usage in banks or other legal transaction if you are undocumented. Mexican officials have also confirmed that these license have no value for nationals from Mexico here in the United States of America or at any of the Mexican Consulates.
Julie Santos Midwest Commissioner for LULAC National Immigrant Affairs Commission stated, “Our community must be warned about these Federations who are selling this false sense of security. We will file an official complaint here in Chicago with the Mexican Consulate for an immediate investigation. The reality is that while the Federal Immigrations laws remain broken & you are undocumented in this country the laws DO NOT protect you. A Mexican Driver License is worthless and if you are stopped by law enforcement you will have NO protection.”
