I was confuse for a moment. The title said Legal immigrants.
I know what you mean from the article. They should not receive 1 dime. Except a bus ride back to their country.
How you going to give bus ride to an undocumented alien who lives 10,000 miles from US for deporting aliens like that US govt would need at least $1000-$1500 per person so ICE normally avoids deport such aliens unless they have a violent criminal history

A onetime cost of $1000 per illegal is paltry compared to the billions we spend every year accommodating these criminals.

That would certainly be cheaper than providing them $12000 per year per child to attend our schools or use health care which is extremely costly. What's the cost of just one maternity hospital stay and all the prenatal and postnatal care, the annual Medicaid costs? The annual costs of food stamps, WIC coupons and so on?
And if they commit violent crimes, the cost of incarcerating them here is ungodly high.
Not to mention the cost of unemployed Americans displaced in the workplace.
But also the illegal or his employer could be fined and some of the fine money can be used to pay for the trip back home.
