We buy frozen chicken and turkeys from a lady in Bonner's Ferry who makes runs to the Hutterite colony in Montana a few times a year. They are the absolute best chicken I've ever had. This will be my first turkey run, but I've heard the turkeys are fantastic. The poultry is humanely raised and harvested and is antibiotic and hormone free.
If anyone is interested, the "Turkey Run" will be on October 20. PM me if you are interested and I'll send you the info to contact the lady who does it.

Turkeys are $1.95 per pound. The last time she did a chicken run (in July) the chickens were $1.85 per pound. More expensive than commercial factory farm chicken but so worth it. I've raised my own meat chickens too but it's SO much nicer to not have to deal with that mess.

The Hutterites make a couple of runs down to Idaho Falls, too. They only sell by word of mouth, but getting on their list isn't very hard- just ask a few friends, and it's likely you will eventually find one of their customers.

The birds are butchered only the day before they make their runs, so their poultry is no more than 48 hours old when they're delivered. They are very well cleaned and are fast frozen.

What Misty said is very true. Their poultry is the tastiest you will ever get these days. When I ate my first chicken, it immediately reminded me of my great aunt's birds. She raised her chickens the same way, and I used to eat them once in a while when I was a little kid.
It was amazing how my taste buds remembered the difference!

And if anyone wants the BEST roasted chicken recipe ever (and easiest)...let me know and I'll post it here. (Going to get a Hutterite chicken from the freezer and roast it tomorrow!)

Here you go...not really my recipe, but I found it so I call it mine.
This is so easy and the high roasting temp makes the skin of the chicken salty and crispy/crunch and the meat is so juicy and wonderful.

You're making me so hungry! I'm going to try that recipe, thanks, Misty! We'll see about getting some chickens for the freezer next time.

On a side note, we discovered Wood's Meats when we were in Clark Fork in August. They're located just north of Sandpoint, but it looks like most local markets stock their meats. Oh my goodness, that's the best bacon I've ever tasted! I think a lot of Sandpoint restaurants serve Wood's bacon. It needs to be pan fried the oldfashioned way, though--too thick for the microwave! And their frozen ground beef makes amazing burgers. We did a cookout on our property, under the stars, with Wood's burgers. Next day I went back to the market and got some more ground meat, and we had another cookout!
