Boise condemns Charlottesville violence, neo-Nazis, KKK | Idaho Statesman

Quote:
The resolution echoes a proclamation the City Council unanimously approved in January declaring that Boise welcomes refugees and other immigrants. Councilwoman Lauren McLean was that proclamation’s primary author.

Quote:
A RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE ACTIONS OF WHITE SUPREMACISTS AND RACIAL VIOLENCE IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA.

WHEREAS, on Saturday, August 12, 2017, the people of Charlottesville, Virginia endured an act of racist violence causing harm to many and claiming the lives of three people; and

WHEREAS, the City of Boise is saddened and outraged at the escalation of anger, hatred, and bigotry that hold no place in our society; and,

WHEREAS, racism is an affront to the ideals of our nation and the conscience of our residents; and,

WHEREAS, the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists and other hate groups do not represent the opinions and values of the people of Boise; and,

WHEREAS, Boise is a community with a spirit of inclusion where we can celebrate and honor our diversity.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BOISE CITY, IDAHO: The Mayor and City Council do hereby reject the message of all hate groups, renounce racism, white supremacy, anti-Semitism, the KKK, neo-Nazis, domestic terrorism and hatred; declare that those who want to spread hatred, bigotry and violence have no place in the city of Boise; and commit to ensuring that Boise remains a place of compassion, where hate is not, and never will be, welcome.

Looks like a perfectly reasonable resolution...

I'd hope this does NOT equate to allowing for the acceptance of people who would circumvent the laws of the nation regarding proper immigration into this country. That's never going to change and the definition of the word "Illegal" won't be altered anytime soon. Might as well say they would allow criminals to do their thing at will unabated. The rest however makes perfect sense. NO acceptance of the behavior that goes against those who simply are different in our culture who have come here through legal channels.

I recommend the Boise City Council may want to hire a new copy editor to review future resolutions, preferably someone who understands the meaning of the word "renounce." I know what they meant, but the resolution does not say what they think it says.

Personally, I find these sorts of things annoying even if well intentioned. They are purely symbolic, and it's hard to believe that the city is so well run that there are no other areas where city council action might actually have a real impact on the operation of the city.

Boise has been selected as a Gateway for Growth city this year. News like this is good for the entire state.

25 Communities Selected for Gateways for Growth Challenge Round II - New American Economy

Quote:
Building on the increasing demand from local government, business, and civic leaders who aim to develop concrete strategies to integrate immigrants and foster economic growth, New American Economy (NAE) and Welcoming America are pleased to announce the 25 communities who will receive a Gateways for Growth award in the second year of the initiative.
Quote:
This year’s Gateways for Growth awardees demonstrated a strong commitment from local government, business, and civil society partners to recognize and highlight the contributions immigrants are making—by bolstering population growth, increasing the tax base, starting new businesses and creating jobs, and adding vibrancy and culture to our social fabric—and to develop concrete strategies and recommendations to maximize these contributions.
Quote:
“These communities are leaders in the broader and growing trend to be more inclusive, offering an alternative to the divisive rhetoric around immigration and showing how inclusion is good for our economy, neighborhoods, and future,” said David Lubell, Executive Director of Welcoming America. “Inclusive economic growth strategies that take into account both U.S. and foreign-born communities make cities more vibrant, attractive places for all residents.”

Sometimes something symbolic resonates with people and inspires them.
I guess you have to be aware of what goes on in Boise and what the city council is busy participating in and approving for this fast growing city. Our city council is always making an impact on Boise and its operations.

One step at a time. No need to read extra language or implications into things. Address each one on its own merits. This one is fine. The one that was issued in Sandpoint in 2016 was not. The one issued in Sandpoint in 2000 was good.

Less is more. Statements of unity that all but the cretins can rally around are great. Where politicians get into trouble is in trying to impose narrow political narratives through moral brow beating. We see a lot of that today.
