I am looking into schools to send my daughter who will be turning 4 in the fall. We are zoned for Chapman and I have no plans to send her there. She currently goes to Huntsville Montessori School and we love it but it is very hard on my budget as I am a single mom. I have been looking into the magnet schools, Academy for Science and Foreign Language and Academy for Arts and Academics. Does anyone have any info on either school? Recommendations, tips, experience? How far in advance should I apply? How are the teachers? Any advice will be much appreciated!

Everyone I know who is or has been involved with those schools (either as a parent or teacher) either loves or hates it. Not a lot of in-between.

Check out GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community. The schools have a lot of reviews from parents and students who have experienced going there. It might give you a good idea about what they are like.

Both schools have excellent reps for academics and challenging curriculum. Personally, if choosing for my child I would want AAA over ASFL, but I do think some talent or perceived talent in the arts is needed to get in. Potential students must test and achieve a minimum score to be accepted.

I know you expressed that chapman was not an option, but I would reconsider. Since the restart of Chapman is a pet project of the superintendent, if could well turn into one of the best schools in the system.

Chapman Elementary is not a bad school, though not all of the teachers are great (our daughter is about to start 3rd grade there, I would say so far her K techer was very good, her 1st grade teacher was decent, and her 2nd grade teacher sub-par). The lesson we have taken from the last year is to be more proactive in getting our daughter into whichever class has the better teacher. The school has an active and committed PTA and a decent and caring (if occasionally clueless) administration, and despite its proximity to the Middle School is safe. I see inprovements coming with he changes that have already been made there (to be put into place this coming school year), and while the Middle School's reputation is abysmal, and deservedly so, as mentioned Wardynski has named fixing it his #1 priority. He talks a good game, and so far has delivered on his talk, so I am at least optimistic for the future of the school (and I am generally not the most optimistic person). I also believe many of the changes he is making at the Middle School will also help improve the Elementary School, both directly and indirectly.

Academy for Academics and Arts. My son attended 7th and 8th grade there. It was and still is an amazing school. Lots of parent participation.

you may contact me personally if you'd like.
