Every additional student is one more person renting an apartment, eating at local restaurants, spending money at local shops and events, etc. Marshall’s successes in attracting addition students is putting a lot of money in the local economy.
This is why it is so great to see our trend of enrollment growth. With Brad Smith making the smart decisions to focus on high paying and growing sectors like aviation, cyber security, medical, and tech I believe we are going to continue to grow. This in turn will be great for Huntington as well. Exciting times and a bright outlook for the Marshall and Huntington communities!
Huntington and Marshall have always had so much unrealized potential but it seems like some of that is starting to change. So many times in the past, a plan for development or growth would be presented only for it to fall by the wayside and never be heard of again. I saw an article earlier this week that Fairmount Properties has purchased the old Latta's building so it seems like those plans for the Innovation district are in motion rather than just an idea. I can't wait to see how that area is transformed. Hopefully we'll start to see some movement in new development on the east end. That would really help to make that area more attractive for future sporting events/tournaments with more restaurants, a new hotel and a new Kroger in that area as I have heard is planned. Then if the soccer stadium expands, a new outdoor track is built and a new indoor tennis building is built, it will further improve the area. As Huntington looks more attractive, so does Marshall and vice versa.

What sort of developer is Fairmount Properties? Have there been any plans made public for that site?

Fairmount Properties is partnering with Marshall to develop the "innovation district" on 4th Avenue. Fairmount is a developer that seems to specialize in developments around colleges/universities and cities. They have recently bought most of the buildings/property on 4th ave between 15th and 16th streets to remodel or build in conjunction with Marshall.
It was announced the Herald Dispatch within the past week that they are going to remodel the Latta's building with this first floor being retail space and they are in talks with multiple med-tech companies on the upper floors. In five years that section of 4th ave is going to look very different in a great way.

Yes it is! I am excited to see it! I, like an earlier poster, have always felt that Huntington in particular and the Tri-State in general have loads of untapped potential. It looks like Huntington is really starting to fulfil that potential.
Brad Smith coming to Marshall has been a homerun hire. They have already secured the funding for the new cyber security institute to go across from old main. All of these new facilities will have a ripple effect as other businesses will want to locate near them will the amount of foot traffic they will generate. The outlook for downtown Huntington is very bright.
That's amazing! I can't wait to see what that stretch of 4th Ave will look like in a few years!
One question: there is mention of a new Visual Arts Center. What becomes of the present VAC downtown?

Marshall enrollment is not growing. Just like WVU, in the past ten years, enrollment has dropped about 20% and is continuing to decline through this year.
