When I'm in Houston, I take the extra time and drive down Telephone Rd. to Joe's in Alvin...The CFS is as good as it can be and will feed you for 2 days and the atmosphere is "solid down home good ol boy" comfortable.

From my childhood, the really good chicken fried steak seemed to be something with a very crunchy crust, tender veal steak, and tasty white gravy with a chicken flavor. The places where one can find the best renditions of it seem to be a constantly moving target ...

I honestly had no idea that other parts of the country didn't know what chicken fried steak was. I've never really thought of looking for it when I'm out of state. I just kinda figured it was served all over the U.S.

I also didn't know that Texas is the birth place of it. Now I know why some restaurants in Texas post billboards that say they have the best CFS there is. And I call myself a Texan...

How about that chicken fried chicken?

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Mel's in Tomball. The people I know know who live in Tomball say it is better than the one at Goodson's. Come on guys, Black Eyed Pea and Luby's are chains. Kelley's has the terrible gravy that takes the flavor away from the meat. I do like Hickory Hollow, and some people I have gone with love it. I personally like Potato Patch.

Definitely Mel's in Tomball. Not at all health food but absolutely worth the drive for home style Texas cooking.
