Hello-
We are moving from upstate NY in August. My job has two locations-northpoint drive (north of 610 on 45) and downtown. I figure i will be going against traffic at least some of the time. We need a safe neighborhood within walking distance of shops/stores as my wife will be home with our new baby. We also want to be inside 610 or close as we want to be close to med ctr, museums, parks etc.. As far as the commute, am I crazy to be looking for house rentals in west university, rice village or bellaire?
I realize this is a common topic, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is your wife not going to have access to a car? I wouldn't really recommend this since Houston is not all that walkable, its very hot in the summer and she'll need to get to doctor appointments etc.

She will have a car. My main concern is being in a safe location where she is able to walk to shops etc. if she wanted to. My other concern is what you folks think about the commute-is being in those areas gonna make for an unbearable commute?

I think you may have a hard time finding that in West U for $1500 - $1800 and it won't really be walkable unless you are in the sections really close to Kirby.

You might also consider the Heights area.

Here's a very useful tool;

Houston home rentals and homes for rent - HAR.com

I've set it to residential lease.

The Heights are an older area to the north of Downtown by the 610. It's a lovely area.

You'd have to live in a few select areas if you want a pregnant woman to be able to walk to the store regularly in the Houston summer heat. Houston is nothing like NY....the heat is extreme in the summer and the distances are usually much too far for walking.

If you wanted to be able to walk to stores, go to some neighborhoods you think look nice, find the biggest grocery stores and such, and look for rentals in the immediate area.

What part of Upstate NY are you coming from? We're part time Houstonians (our permanent home is in Lafayette LA) but I hail from Binghamton, and my husband is from Syracuse.

Can't help you with your rental search, but I agree with everyone else. Walking to and from the store is not really an option in Houston. The heat and humidity are brutal, plain and simple. Good luck with your search
