This morning as I was starting my commute I noticed a medium sized Hawk at the edge of my driveway on the ground eating something. As I drove by he flew off and was struggling with about a 2 1/2 foot copperhead in his clutches.

Hawks and snakes are nothing new to my neighborhood (2 sides of my property in Memorial are boarded by a creek..i.e snake magnet). But it was 35 degrees this morning!!!! I thought snakes hibernated during the Winter.

I sure hope this is not an indication of the number of slithery critters this spring.

Snakes don't quite hibernate the same way bears do. They do start to explore once the temperature consistently warms up. Yesterday was a nice day. Probably the snake came out looking for food and got "caught" by the cold when the sun went down. We did have a cold snap again last night. Once when I was a young lad on a Boy Scout camping trip I was hiking through the woods early one morning. I stopped for a moment and looked down, found I was standing on a copperhead. Realized it was cold enough that he wasn't about to move. I went on and I'm sure he started to move once the sun warmed him up a bit.
