Hi there,

Can some one explain to me how the IT job market is in Houston?, I am a software developer, and I am fad up of the MN cold weather, and planning to move to Houston , TX, but employers may not be happy to pay for relocation, I am going to just move, and look for a job, how bad or how good is the job market there?

I appreciate you advice!

Not so good that I would recommend you move here without a job. If your not worried about relocation consider getting a local address and phone number (you can use skype or have your cell carrier change to a Houston area code and get a ups store box in Houston that forwards to you) and just tell them your local so you could at least line up interviews.

I agree with Chris. Do not give up a job to come here. Good jobs are getting real scarce, even the city and county governments are talking about lay-offs.

Agree with other posters, some IT jobs are getting outsourced. But I understand leaving the twin towns. I left in 89 and dont intend to return.

Haha! It's so true. I am also so fed up of the cold and planning to move to Houston this coming year too. Best of luck to you.

Thanks, Guys, I am actually a contractor here in twin cities and I am now in between contracts, so what I am thinking is , istead of spending the wait time here in the cold weather , will that be a good idea to come up to houston and wait for any good luck. By the way, what is the current unemployement rate in Houston right now?

Thanks,
Joyi19.

Houston’s unemployment rate dips to 8.2 percent

For only the third time this year, the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area unemployment rate dipped to 8.2 percent in November from 8.4 percent the previous month, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday.

The area gained 9,300 nonagricultural employment during the month, a 0.4 percent rise from October.

Job growth was boosted particularly by 10,100 jobs being added in the trade, transportation and utilities, 1,600 jobs in the government and 700 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sectors.

Thanks guys, for your helpful comments. It seems that Texas is in the right track for better recovery, considering the sharp improvemnet in unemployement and added jobs.
I will look forward live and enjoy the nine good months

Hey, I would appreciate if any one can tell me what the local newspaper/magazine is, where new jobs are posted?

The paper here is the Houston Chronicle. Houston news, entertainment, search and shopping | chron.com - Houston Chronicle . You can also try Houston Craigslist, that is where I post job openings when I have them.

Houston is not a big IT center--especially for legacy programming like Cobol. We would be back there now if it was. There are not a lot of large bank IT centers there like there are in Charlotte. In addition, the oil companies have been on a binge the last 7 - 8 years or so to outsource backroom IT jobs overseas.

Relocation reimbursement is really hard to get any where unless you have a skill set that an employer really wants and can't get elsewhere. And guess where they will go to get it before they will pay relocation?
