SM is in LA area - they have Occidental, UCLA, USC, CalTech (probably the most prestigious school in the country) etc. Or did you mean the IMMEDIATE area?

Caltech is the most pretigious in the country? LMAO.

It's an excellent school, but far from Ivy league prestige.

Well having lived in both CA (los angeles) and Austin at different points I found austin to be much more desirable, but that's just me. Less congestion and smog, still great weather and very pretty, and IMO much more to do entertainment wise because there was so much music every night of the year, plus your clubs and bars (which LA has too but its much harder to get to because you drive everywhere). Austin is sadly becoming more like california though and last time I visited I was shocked at the congestions and how croweded EVERYWHERE was - just getting in a restaurant you have to wait because so many people are scrambling to get in.

IMO Galveston would be more like Santa Monica since you have the strand and a beach (but not nearly as nice until they clean up the ghetto factor there!).
If the following post is your single source of someone comparing the Village to Santa Monica then why don't you ask that person rather than posting an entirely new topic?

I've never heard that comparison and I think it's just plain silly. It's even sillier for you to post a question like that when a single person makes the comment on an obscure internet forum. Besides, I think the OP was referring to the street grid more than the character of the area. {Mod cut- Personal attack}

I kind of chuckeled when he said the MOST prestigious school in the country, but it's not far from Ivy League. It's ranked 4th in the nation this year by US News, tied with MIT.

Ivy is a sports league. Lay people's worship of Ivies is kind of odd -and I went to Cornell, an ivy!!!

There are schools outside the ivy sports league that are superior academically to most ivy league schools. Stanford for instance is better than Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn. Rice is probably on par with Cornell or Brown. UC Berkeley is probably better than all but the top Ivies, and grad program wise is very very good.

And CalTech and MIT, as far as the rigor and prestige of undergrad education, are much more prestigious than any ivy league. You have to basically be a math genius to even be admitted to CalTech.

Rankings are not perfect - they give a good overall picture (for instance, if 2 schools are 50 rankings apart it's a safe bet the higher ranked school is better) but when it comes to fine distinctions (school 8 vs. school 3 for instance) it's much trickier.

Dude, to call Ivy league just a sports league is quite short-sighted, although I am quite familiar with the non-Ivys that are "more" prestigious than the Ivys. I was accepted to MIT and several Ivys and chose not to attend any of them. Because I had my choice of schools I did VERY in depth research on a whole lot of schools to make sure I picked the right place for me.

That's fine. I've lived in Austin too, and quite frankly found it to be overrated.
So you didn't much like where you were in CA, yet it seems you are always complaining about Houston on these boards.

Unless it's Austin.

And its 'great weather' -- LOL.
